Well, I'm not going to have potential contributers shooting themselves in
the foot without knowing it. The way I see it, you have one chance to hook
a contributer; you can't make a single instruction obscure or leave out a
simple instruction that takes someone a couple hours to figure out on their
own, if you do, you just lost a potential contributer.
Of course, leaving out those simple instructions or making them obscure will
cost you time on the mailing list :)
As Chris said, the ultimate solution is to patch imake so that it links with
binmode.o. I don't want to remove my binmode instructions until a patch to
imake is accepted by XFree86 and released in a new source release. We still
have a few days or weeks (I don't remember which) to get such a patch into
XFree86 4.1.0, as it should be considered a bug fix.
