I've now managed to solve the problem and thought I had better let you and
the list know.
The problem was that the .dll files in /usr/X11R6/bin did not have execute
access. So I did a 'chmod o+x,u+x,g+x *.dll' (probably overkill) and the
package all started to work. And it looks very nice too!
Many thanks for all your responses and the good work you are doing in
porting the Xfree package to Cygwin.
