Hi Andy,
wget download a lot of stuff only if you forgot the last /
I guess we can considered it a bug of wget.

About the package size, slang is a library so
slang-2.2.2-1.tar.bz2 is empty as there are no 
utilities associated to put in the slang package.

There are also other packages built in this way:

slang-2.2.2-1-src.tar.bz2         source package name as upstream
slang-2.2.2-1.tar.bz2             empty package   
libslang2-2.2.2-1.tar.bz2         dll package
libslang-devel-2.2.2-1.tar.bz2    development package
