ar cru libsed.a getopt1.o getopt.o utils.o strverscmp.o regex.o
ar: libsed.a: No such file or directory

This is a bug.

Which version of binutils are you using ?
Which host and target are involved ?

Do you have a simple test case which can reproduce the problem ?
