I can confirm that as of the binutils CVS of today, this bug is closed. The
relevant change is at

Not sure if it applies/is useful with the binutils unstable is shipping
right now.
Kudos to everybody for helping fix this up!
Thanks, especially to Christian Leber who did a lot of the legwork figuring
out where the bug was (gcc, libc or binutils).
