I agree with all of this 100%.

I wanted to point out that I have recently been actively blocking any
spam that I see here, so if foo@bar.com posts spam, I will set up a
mailing list block within an hour or so (assuming I'm awake).  That
means that if foo@bar.com decides to send spam again, they won't be able
to.

In fact, if I see spam on any one of the mailing lists that I monitor
(gcc, gdb, binutils, cygwin, insight), I block it for all of those
lists.

Just so you know that we aren't just ignoring the spam.
