installation problem with binutils-2.10.1.0.4

Hi this may not be the appropriate forum for this newbie question, if not
could someone please guide me to somewhere appropriate.

Im trying to upgrade my linux 2.2.5-22 to 2.4 and 2.4 documentation said
to upgrade a bunch of other software among which is binutils.

so I got binutils-2.10.1.0.4
and when I try to ./configure it I get the following error:

---------------------------------------------------
Configuring for a i686-pc-linux-gnu host.
Created "Makefile" in /usr/home/mbil/kernels/binutils-2.10.1.0.4 using
"mt-frag"
collect2: ld returned 33 exit status
*** The command 'gcc -o conftest -g conftest.c' failed.
*** You must set the environment variable CC to a working compiler.
---------------------------------------------------

echoing $CC results in gcc. And I have a 2 year old machine so Im
definitely not using RedHat7 with its egcs problems.
Im afraid I dont know enough about Makefiles and configure to figure this
out.

other relevant info:
gcc version egcs-2.91.66 19990314/Linux (egcs-1.1.2 release)
GNU ld version 2.9.1 (with BFD 2.9.1.0.23)

Im also supposing that the recommendation to upgrade binutils might only
be for the 'ld' linker, is there a way I can just try to install that
rather than everything in binutils?

thanks
